This live, online class will span a 4-week period for 2 hours on a weekly basis.
Where: From the comfort of your favorite armchair.
How: All you need to take this live, online course is a Zoom account. We encourage you to sign up for your free Zoom account before the first session. You will receive your Zoom meeting link two weeks before the course begins.
What: Pain education is far more than CONVINCING a patient that movement is not dangerous. What do you need to do to truly engage your patient in understanding pain besides just talking "at" them?
Syllabus
Patients often challenge pain education. Some only partially reconceptualize pain and sceptics question your knowledge and the intent of your message. You might feel that pain education only works when a person already trusts you and is ready to try a new approach to recovery. The question for many physiotherapists is not “what do I teach?”, but rather “what are my options when my patient doesn’t believe everything I say?”. Occasionally the question is also “what exactly is it that I am trying to change when I tell a patient about a neuron, or descending modulation, or a neurotag?” Research supports the benefits of education intended to help patients reconceptualize pain when pain persists.
These sessions help you embed language and actions aligned with our current understanding of pain and recovery within all patient interactions. We will critically review the content of lecture based education, exploring how to increase your success in delivery of the key messages. Then we will discuss solutions and techniques when patients either partially reconceptualize pain , or not at all. Practical tips and scripts as well as conflict resolution strategies will be discussed to enhance your patients’ outcomes.
Upon completion of this course, participants will:
- Understand how to integrate education throughout clinical and therapeutic interactions, rather than using pain education as a stand-alone modality.
- Know how to shift patient education from an intellectual process to ‘lived’ experiences throughout clinical and therapeutic interactions.
- Be able to state the purpose of specific patient education processes.
- Know how to create embodied experiences to increase success of pain education when challenge by strongly embedded beliefs.
Session 1 Learning Objectives

- Understand the specific intent of each component of a typical pain education session

- Understand different approaches and outcomes of pain education discussed in research reports
- Gain instruction and practice in an expert-guided and evidence-based pain self-care technique to support pain education
