Syllabus

Upon completion of this course, participants will learn how to:

  • Understand how to embed education throughout clinical and therapeutic interactions.
  • Create embodied educational experiences throughout clinical and therapeutic interactions.
  • Be able to state the purpose of specific pain education processes.
  • Know how to modify pain education to meet varied pain, function and quality of life outcomes.

Pre-Requisites (Recommended)

  • Understand contemporary pain theories, and their historical evolution.

  • Understand research evidence and importance of re-conceptualizing pain across continuum of acute to chronic pain

  • Read Explain Pain, and Understand Pain Live Well Again

Benefits

Research supports the benefits of education intended to help patients re-conceptualize pain. The partial re-conceptualize of pain after typical ‘cognitive’ education might indicate that a lived and felt body experience is required for some individuals, or that inconsistencies within the assessment and treatment process might reinforce unhelpful pain beliefs. These sessions will explore embedding pain education within all patient interactions, and encourage a shift to the intention of making the embodied ‘physical’ experiences of assessment and treatment into educational agents. Practical tips and scripts will be provided.
