Syllabus

Upon completion of this course, participants will learn how to:

  • Understand the history of osteoporosis diagnosis and define osteoporosis/osteopenia according to WHO
  • Discuss risk factors and epidemiology for low bone mass
  • Understand the DEXA scan process and how to read the report
  • Access and calculate a FRAX score
  • Explain the bony physiological changes associated with osteoporosis/osteopenia
  • Understand and demonstrate movement precautions for clients with osteoporosis/Osteopenia
  • Understand the emotional impact of a low bone mass diagnosis
  • Articulate the difference between low bone mineral density and bone quality
  • Understand the physiology of bone strengthening
  • Discuss pharmacological treatments for low bone mass, the evidence for efficacy and side effect
  • Review current dietary recommendations for osteoporosis/osteopenia
  • Review the current literature for exercise and osteoporosis/osteopenia
  • Evaluate clients with low bone mass diagnoses and plan safe evidenced based treatment
  • Demonstrate osteo safe exercise
  • Access resources for clients with low bone mass
  • Clinically support clients with this diagnosis to live full and active lives and take a holistic approach to treatment

This course enables participants to REFRAME the assessment and treatment of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a common condition affecting 1 in 4 women and over 1 in 8 men. This has implications for our rehab. We often screen for it, but do not address it. 

In this course, participants will apply their knowledge of osteoporosis, osteopenia, exercises and rehabilitation principles for the comprehensive assessment and treatment within a rehabilitation framework. 

This live, 8-hour course is designed for rehabilitation clinicians looking to upskill their understanding of the assessment process, medical treatments, movement principles, safety principles and exercises appropriate for someone presenting to your proactive with osteoporosis or osteopenia. 

Evidence-based assessment and treatment techniques will be emphasized with a focus on the biopsychosocial perspectives and creating osteo safe treatment plans allowing clients to live full, active and safe lives.

Mikki Townsend, PT, DPT

Mikki is a UK ex-pat! She originally studied Sports Science at Liverpool Polytechnic, followed by a master’s in physical education from the University of Western Ontario in Canada. She attended Physical Therapy School at the University of Florida and completed her clinical doctorate at Rocky Mountain University in Utah. She is a Certified Orthopedic Specialist, Rehabilitation Certified Pilates Instructor (Polestar), Pilates Method Alliance Certified and a Master Instructor for Balanced Body. Mikki has been a clinician for 30 years and a Pilates teacher for 20 years at New Motion Physical Therapy and Studio on beautiful Bainbridge Island in Washington State. Mikki has specialized in pain neuroscience, pelvic health, spine and osteoporosis. She has presented at Pilates on Tour, ISPI, NOI conference and the Dystonia Symposium.

Participation Policy

  • To receive a certificate for course participation, it is allowable to miss one class in the posted class schedule. If you miss more than one class, you will be ineligible for a class certificate.
  • We will only offer one recording for one missed session.
  • No refunds will be given for missed classes.

Cancellation Policy

  • Cancellations that are made 15 days or more in advance of the class start date, will receive a 100% refund by original payment method minus 10% administration fees.
  • Cancellations made within 14 days or less of the event will receive a credit towards the same course to be taken within one calendar year. No refunds will be issued in this time period.
  • Please let your instructor know if you will be missing a class so that the instructor knows.
