Syllabus

Upon completion of this course, participants will learn how to:

  • Learn about the psychological processes of ACCEPTANCE and PSYCHOLOGICAL FLEXIBILITY as they relate to pain and other distressing symptoms in rehabilitation settings
  • Our clients’ sense of self is often disrupted by pain and disability. A central tenant of ACT is supporting folks with reconnecting to that which is meaningful to them, their personal VALUES. This is a critical process for providing flexible and individualized care. You will be introduced to a variety of ACT-based strategies for values exploration so that you can determine what will work best for your practice in general and have options to support your clients with this process as individuals.
  • Learn about the 6 core processes in Acceptance and Commitment Therapy that foster psychological flexibility in recovery and some simple strategies for introducing and exploring these processes with clients.
  • Learn about engaging folks in graded exposure using an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy lens. We will discuss how this differs from traditional graded exposure and when it may be indicated.

Benefits

This course enables participants to REFRAME your understanding of the psychological processes that underlie pain and distressing physical symptoms and the therapeutic progress.

In this course, participants will apply their knowledge of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy Techniques and rehabilitation principles to assess and treat the biopsychosocial aspects of pain including working on graded exposure, value-based rehab and psychological flexibility for clients with pain or physical distress.

Evidence-based assessment and treatment techniques will be emphasized.
