Syllabus

Upon completion of this course, participants will learn how to:

  • Increase your understanding of the psychological processes that often keep patients stuck with their pain and other distressing physical symptoms
  • Broaden understanding of the complexities of fear in rehabilitation in order to be able to respond to each individual client more effectively
  • Learn simple CBT-based strategies for supporting clients to broaden their awareness of their emotional, cognitive, and behavioral responses to their experience of symptoms
  • Practice techniques for countering common unhelpful thinking patterns that often arise when patients are struggling with difficult experiences
  • Learn how to get your patients moving and re-engaged with the things that are important to them using behavioral experiments and graded exposure hierarchies designed to challenge fear and bolster self-efficacy

This course enables participants to REFRAME their understanding of the psychological processes that underlie pain and distressing physical symptoms and stop therapeutic progress. 

In this course, participants will apply their knowledge of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Techniques and rehabilitation principles to assess and treat the biopsychosocial aspects of pain including fear, emotion, behaviour and cognition.

    Lara Desrosiers

    Lara is the owner of Pelvic Resilience, an Occupational Therapy practice in Ontario focused on supporting individuals struggling with the complexities of pain and pelvic health challenges. Lara graduated from McMaster University in 2009 with a passion for mental health and has been working to support individuals struggling with mental illness, trauma, addictions, and chronic pain ever since. She is devoted to integrating her skills in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Behavioral Activation, and trauma-informed care into traditional rehabilitation. She is also a keen mentor for clinicians interested in improving their communication skills and building a more integrative toolkit.

    Get ongoing support with free office hours and monthly drop-in sessions with instructors–available indefinitely to all course graduates.

    • To receive a certificate for course participation, it is allowable to miss one class in the posted class schedule. If you miss more than one class, you will be ineligible for a class certificate.
    • We will only offer one recording for one missed session.
    • No refunds will be given for missed classes.

    Cancellation Policy

    • Cancellations that are made 15 days or more in advance of the class start date, will receive a 100% refund by original payment method minus 10% administration fees.
    • Cancellations made within 14 days or less of the event will receive a credit towards the same course to be taken within one calendar year. No refunds will be issued in this time period.
    • Please let your instructor know if you will be missing a class so that the instructor knows.
