Syllabus
Upon completion of this course, participants will learn how to:
-
Describe key constructs of the trauma experience and psycho-educate the patient about them.
-
Apply a greater understanding and comfort of “in scope” and “out of scope” behaviours clinicians can take with the patients, insofar as the patients’ trauma is displayed.
-
Implement strong referral patterns, backed by accuracy and informed knowledge of various approaches.
-
Effectively deconstruct myths and inaccurate treatment attempts that are commonly held by many patients.
-
Demonstrate relationship abilities that create psychological safety and trust with the patients, that then ripen the ground for more intensive psychotherapy treatments effectively.
-
Practice from a trauma informed care orientation, both in clinical and organizational interactions.
Benefits
Physiotherapists, and other rehab professionals, must equip themselves with, at minimum, a basic understanding of trauma and its impacts on people. All too often, the word “trauma” is used to describe an event, rather than its correct signification: the lasting responses of emotional, physical, and cognitive symptoms that come from distressing or horrible events.
Approximately 70% of adults are believed to have experienced some type of traumatic event at some point in their lives, with about 3.5% of the population meeting the criteria for PTSD. Every professional that works in the field of human services must ethically practice from a trauma informed lens, and be able to treat trauma with at least a beginner’s level of proficiency. Intended for non-mental health practitioners who provide care, this course will equip students with a solid skill set that includes:
- a comprehensive trauma framework including “big T” and “little t” experiences
- a look at common assessment measures available to non-mental health professionals
- how to understand the bio-psycho-social framework of trauma, its' symptomology and neurobiology
- instruction on interpersonal dynamics with trauma clients (what to "say" or "not say")
- orientation of the student to the most common recovery modalities (including CBT, EMDR, body work and more), including their strengths and weaknesses.
