Upon completion of this course, participants will learn how to:

  • Learn how to get on the same page with your patients and build an effective
    therapeutic alliance
  • Increase your understanding of the psychological processes that often keep folks
stuck with their pain and other distressing physical symptoms
  • Learn psychologically-informed strategies (rooted in CBT and ACT principles) for
working through common stuck points and fostering self-efficacy in recovery.
  • Practice techniques for helping our clients to identify and respond differently to
the rules and beliefs that may not be serving them in their recovery.
  • Learn how to get your clients moving through fear and re-engaged with the things
that are important to them by creating experiential opportunities to challenge fear
    and bolster self-efficacy.

Benefits

Have you ever worked with a patient where it felt like Ground Hog Day each time they
come to see you? Do you feel like you are repeating the same messages, finding
different ways to increase their understanding of pain, or applying the same treatments
session upon session and not making any headway. When a patient is stuck in their
symptoms and struggling to take steps forward in their recovery, it can be incredibly
frustrating. How the heck can we help them to get on with it?

Giving information and direction simply isn’t enough to facilitate change. We have to
help our patients name and get curious about what is keeping them stuck so that we
can work together to find a path forward. Is it fear? If so, what are they afraid of? Is it
preoccupation with their symptoms? Is it a myriad of rules and hypervigilance about how
they should be moving and what their symptoms mean?

CBT-informed skills and questions can help clinicians understand the sticking points
which can help us to reframe our interventions in a more impactful way. Offering the
right strategies at the right time can help us take steps forward alongside our patients.
If you are feeling like you need more tools to identify these sticking points and support
your patients with moving through them, this is the course for you!
