Syllabus

Upon completion of this course, participants will learn how to:

  • Describe key constructs of the trauma experience and psycho-educate the patient about them.

  • Apply a greater understanding and comfort of “in scope” and “out of scope” behaviours clinicians can take with the patients, insofar as the patients’ trauma is displayed.

  • Implement strong referral patterns, backed by accuracy and informed knowledge of various approaches.

  • Effectively deconstruct myths and inaccurate treatment attempts that are commonly held by many patients.

  • Demonstrate relationship abilities that create psychological safety and trust with the patients, that then ripen the ground for more intensive psychotherapy treatments effectively.

  • Practice from a trauma informed care orientation, both in clinical and organizational interactions.

Pre-Requisites

Students are encouraged to complete Level 1 before Level 2.

Benefits

his course enables participants to REFRAME the oft misunderstood experiences of trauma and its impacts. Concepts such as dissociation, attachment and dysregulation are, for most health care professionals, muddy and frightening aspects of care, that also must be understood clearly in order for treatment to be both ethical and optimized. In Level 1, we will lay a foundation for understanding the spectrum, of trauma experiences, and how that experience impacts physical health. We will develop a language that can be used to guide conversations with the patient about this aspect of their history. In Level 2, we will learn how to have a healing presence with the client, including how to create mental health referral patterns that are both informed and compelling for the patient. Students are not required to take both levels.

In this course, participants will apply their knowledge of client interactions, history taking and psychosocial assessment in a more skillful way, helping to fill out the clinical picture that the patient brings.

This live, 8-hour course is designed for health professionals that wish to gain confidence and tools for dealing more effectively with patients that have experienced trauma scenarios that are impacting overall physical health.

Evidence-based assessment and treatment techniques will be emphasized. Participants will be introduced to basic assessments, symptom sets, tools for language and conversation shaping, as well as ways to define scope, as non-mental health professionals.
